A Tokyo vintage shop, “Pass the Baton”
“ this vintage shop promotes a new idea of recycling : pass on things that you truly love.
the idea is that if an object is used and not needed anymore, people can pass it along without making new goods (and potential waste). so that each new owner can create their own new memories. ‘pass the baton’ is a new personal culture marketplace in japan, a country where the idea of buying used items is not really appreciated. this could change quickly, the bricks-and-mortar flagship store in the center of tokyo  offers buyers and sellers a fashionable forum for exchange. as a member of the ‘pass the baton’ initiative, people can sell as simply as one would at a flea market, but with the added dimension of optioning proceeds to charity.50% of the proceedings are distributed to the seller. the seller will then contribute a part or all of proceeds to one of several social action groups through the non-profit organization charity platform (NPO).‘pass the baton’ is the brainchild of masamichi toyama, soup stock entrepreneur, a well-known chain of soup kitchens across tokyo. he is known for being a keen businessman as well as an artist (he took charge of the art direction for his stores) and will soon be opening his 35th store. the pass the baton stores in the omotesando and marunouchi area have been

SEIL bag by Lee Myung Su Design Lab
“Usually, bicycle riders use pouch or backpack to carry wallet, mobile phone and water bottle. Bicycles riders’ backpack is a must-have item for outdoor activities. LED and flexible PCB applied Seil Bag is bicycle riders’ backpack for safe riding.
When a rider using hand-signal, the rider is riding bicycle with one hand. It can lead an accident. But this product provides safer and simpler control for bicycle riders. Seil Bag is designed to show left and right turn signal of a bicycle rider. Simply, controlling the detachable wireless controller enables various signals such as directional signals, emergency signal.”

“Today, most of the soap we use is liquid soap, which contains a lot of water. Block soap instead is more concentrated and therefore has some ecological benefits: You don’t transport unnecessary water around. In place of plastic bottles you can simply use paper for packaging. The solid blocks can easily be piled and allow a greater space efficiency in a truck.

But what about the usage of soap bars? I don’t like the weird slippery feeling when I use them. It gives me goose bumps. And under the shower, it always slides out of your fingers. Hand soap also often gets dirty and accumulates bacteria when more than one person is using it.

I designed two dispensers that turn block soap into beautiful little flakes. They offer you a new comfortable sensation when they are falling on your hands and easily dissolve in water.”

Description from the architects:

Its location close to the railway station of the AVE high speed train in Cordoba city can take advantage of this gap as a unique opportunity, giving the character and scale necessary to assume as a new focus of interest not only confined to the neighborhood, but as a magnet in conjunction with the city.
We opted for a solution that allows a wide variety of uses. It offers a covered area, protected from the weather, which will house a temporary market two days a week and other activities at other times.
It therefore poses a solution based on prefabricated circular elements that vary in height and diameter and arranged in a flexible manner to allow a similar vision of an urban forest of shadows. The parasols also solve the artificial lighting in the same item and allow drainage of water inside.

You can watch some short videos on YouTube about the project here and here.

“All men dream; but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty
recesses of their minds
Awake to find that it was vanity;
But the dreamers of day are dangerous men.
That they may act their dreams with open
eyes to make it possible.”

Thinking about new ways we consume media.
“A popular Thai publishing company, A Book, has created a new promotion with the help of BBDO to introduce new readers to their books. Working with the idea that people are often bored in public places or in transit, A Book gives the reader short stories or book synopses to enjoy. A Book developed five concepts: SMS, stickers, a widget, place mats and best of all, a printout machine reminiscent of queue tickets.” -via psfk.com [via Creative Criminals]

Create a light that you can roll around easily and adjust the neck length. There are studio lighting that works but has maintained an industrial/utilitarian look. Can there be a chic designed equivalent?

the temporary stedelijk at the stedelijk museum amsterdam | august 28 , 2010 - january 9, 2011

the interactive work by roman ondák is a part of the current exhibition, ‘taking place’ at the temporary stedelijk (the stedelijk museum amsterdam). By addressing its history, the spatial and temporal conditions of the unfinished building and the ways in which artists use, occupy and animate museum spaces, ‘taking place’ shows works by local, national and international contemporary artists, who range from well-known and established figures to emerging artists.

I like how the participants build the meat of this installation, and how they organize something quite interesting and beautiful with simple instructions. The unadulterated quality to the infographic also makes it so honest and fascinating.

Installation titled: ‘nemore’  by collective Fishing For Compliments

One of the magical aspects to taking an electronics class was learning how to transfer behavioral language into code. To take this installation as an example, the simple gesture of bending a graphite pole with a servomotor that reacts (presumably in response to an IR sensor) to the presence of a person creates the illusion of a greater cognitive response by the installation.

As of late, I have been struggling between how I feel about art as I am delving more into the design world. This installation reminds of the intersect between both worlds, where artists+collectives are carrying out their practices from interesting and less expected disciplines with interesting application of skills + techniques. (at least compared to the mass association to art as more traditional mediums).

The small gesture this installation encapsulates in the input-response system at play, runs along the same vein of fundamentals that designers in the field of UX and product designers must often consider.

It is nice to remember what inspired me through my ICAM days and be reminded that even though it is not “art” I am engaging in now, it is part of what I am doing because it is my history that brings me to my interests now.

Space considerations.
The Bi Chair by Elemento Diseno is a dual-function chair and a table/shelf
Taking it further: Can the single chair also be modified so it can serve as a table? The necessity for pairs requires purchasing in even numbers. What if I just wanted a pair and have it serve both purposes?
